My takeaway from attending Goldilocks Kabuhayan Bakery Grand Launch

Goldilocks Kabuhayan Bakery Grand Launch

Life is how you make it, When one door closes, another one opens, these are some of the quotations I remember whenever I hear people talks about the alternatives; people who are up for change and willing to embrace the challenges for the greater good. In my recent trip to Batangas, we met with a community who already made their choice and shut down a global threat for their future generation.

In 2015, Verde Island Passage (VIP) Lobo, Batangas was in the spotlight for having the worlds famous Shorefish Biodiversity endangered because of excessive mining. Due to lack of viable livelihood options, most residents surrounding the barangays opt for small-scale mining.

Small-scale mining as defined by the R.A. 7076, refers to the act of mining activities which rely heavily on manual labor. Although there are laws regarding its implementation, there's still no absolute assurance for the rehabilitation of damaged areas.

In response to this, the Goldilocks foundation, in partnership with ABS-CBN Lingkod Kapamilya Foundation Inc.'s Bantay Kalikasan, and the Nutrition Center of the Philippines, recently launched a fully-functional Kabuhayan Bakery - built to provide alternative means of livelihood to the local populace and reduce their dependence on mining.

The bakery, located in Masaguitsit-Banalo High School, is the first of many planned for other locales around the VIP. It has already hired and trained locals, mostly students, to operate the bakery. Aside from baking, they are also given the knowledge in running the business from a managerial perspective.

As one of the program's partner, Honda Philippines donated a motorcycle so the bakery's products can be transported around the area.

According to Goldilocks Marketing Manager Eloisa Lacap, they are hoping that through the Kabuhayan Bakery project, lesser people around the VIP pursue other livelihood options. She also added that keeping the populace from mining will definitely help in the conservation of the area.

The school is currently producing roughly 500 pieces of bread in different variety per day, which they sell for 5 Pesos each. According to ALFKI-BK Program Director Johanna Jeraldine Santos, they are also planning to introduce bread out of native fruits like atis, tamarind, and kamias.

During the launch, we were given the opportunity to see and experience what the programs aim to preserve. We went touring Lobo's Mangrove Forest,

snorkell in the world's famous shorefish biodiversity,

and get our hand's dirty planting trees and harvesting veggies at this organic farm.

Goldilocks foundation also aims to expand this Kabuhayan Bakery Project not only in Batangas but all over the Philippines.

In this 2-day trip, I realized that we often look regretfully with missed opportunities and sulk with negativity, that we no longer see how limitless our chances are. Living in Manila may bring drought to our creativity and will to strive, but if we focus less on the negatives and start working our way up, maybe a bunch of opportunities awaits. Just like some of the people in Lobo, Batangas, shutting down small-scale mining left them penniless, but they took the challenge and it now opens new windows of opportunities for them to gain more.

QUARTER LIFE CRISIS: I never thought it would feel like this

Lola Rosy is that one person I fear of when I was a child. She has this kontrabida Cherrie Gil vibe that makes me very uncomfortable. Her white permed hair tells me she's someone above everyone in the neighborhood and she's more than just my grandmother; she's a health worker rockstar and the wife of the barangay captain (My Lolo). Lola Elsa is the opposite. She has the smell of baby powder, gas, and wood that obviously came from relentlessly scrubbing our wooden floor. She hates bugs and mites and she makes the best smelling sinangag ever. Tita Merly, is my ever caring and youthful lola. She doesn't want to be tagged as Lola thus the word Tita. Well, she deserves all the rights to that because of her undeniably YOLO vibe. I remember seeing her face glow as she swings her hips and dance to the groove of pop music back when we used to have family reunions. Growing up with my grandmothers made me a "Lola's Boy". I remember how I give them headache's and heartaches from stealing money, my cousin's toys, and ulam (oh that pritong galunggong), hiding inside the cabinet and messing the clothes, escaping the house premise during their forbidden time, keeping a snake, taking care of frogs, skipping elementary, and much more. I may not be their favorite apo, but what can they do? They've no choice but to take care of me back then. Now that I've grown up, I don't know how I can turn back the favor.  If only I have a magical wand that can give them back their youth, I would, but all I have now is this situation.

Realizations after Running: Robinsons 10th Fit and Fun Wellness Buddy Run

Suddenly, I found myself walking with a crowd of running individuals wearing the same shirt as me. I was there for a reason, but in that moment I don't know what that effing reason is. My blog pushes me to be on the go even though deep inside me I am saying no. I am anti-social masqueraded by my obnoxious extrovert personality. I'm grateful I was considered to be a buddy for this run in defiance of my refusal. I got lots of goods afterward, but what am I here for?

I'm in the point of my life where I try to find purpose in everything I do. I know you might be thinking what the fuck is wrong with me? But the hell I care with your thoughts. I'm fat, ugly, and trying hard. I eat bashing for breakfast so I decided to make my existence worthwhile. If I am making an impact, if I disturbed them and comfort those who are disturbed, then maybe I am doing what I am made for.

So why I am here?

Realizations after Running: Robinsons 10th Fit and Fun Wellness Buddy Run

Sir Ed from was holding his phone high doing a live broadcast on his Facebook account. He was creating publicity mileage for the event. Me? Well, I was trying to join him and somehow observing. Judging runners with their ways. Bashing everyone who threw their rubbish on the sidewalk, neglecting all the trash bags located at every stop. Hating the fact that they all look beautiful and confident despite sweat and dirt. God, I am so insecure! Maybe that is what I am here for. To release all the negatives and reflect on all the goodness the world has to offer. I envy them so much that I want to look and feel like them in an instant. My enemy is myself. That fucking lazy ass of mine needs some working to do.

This Robinson's Supermarket wellness advocacy is one with the universe to make people like me realize how much worth it, it is to stay fit and healthy. I also discovered how much they care for our total wellness because of this post from a blogger friend on Facebook.

Collecting and making their stores a drop-off point for "Ecobricks" is a small gesture that can create a big impact on our planet. To know more about Ecobrick click HERE

It's like everything is collaborating to tell me not to fuck up things. What am I doing with myself ignoring all their signages everytime I shop at the Robinsons Selections store? What am I doing with my life?
The fun run is just one of the programs this July. Robinsons Supermarket is also giving away Healthy You snack platters for a minimum purchase of Php 3,000 inclusive of Php 500 worth of participating items of the Wellness Festival.

Robinsons Supermarket‘s commitment to wellness campaign extends to providing Filipinos with delicious and healthy food options and alternatives. Check out their Facebook page or website to see what's good for you.

READ: My dog just bit me

Cali after grooming
A few weeks ago, I adopted a dog named Cali. He obviously has fear aggression due to the fact that he has never been socialized for almost 2 years. Today he bit me. I was broken hearted because, for all I know, we're already ok. Before the incident, we were already playing. I was able to walk him to the vet for check up and grooming and carry him back home. I even prepared him a bed. While giving him a goodnight touch, he suddenly bit me. I gazed upon his eyes as I hold my hands up high. I saw fear and loneliness. I don't know what is going on in his mind, but I can really feel his pain. I cry every time I remember. I wanted to hate who ever did him wrong but what's the point?

I know Cali was born to be sold. He never gets the love he deserves from his previous family. Growing up he never realized his purpose because he was chained all day and doesn't get enough time to socialize. When I adopted Cali, I know it'll be a long and hard journey. Giving him treats, playing with him, walking him around the house compound doesn't work instantly. There are moments where he just started to growl and bark at me for no reason.

According to PAWS, it is not responsible to abandon dogs because of their behavior, yet here in the Philippines, there are still a huge amount of stray dogs that are up for adoption. Some are even euthanized because of the lack of facilities or because of their aggressiveness.

There are already too many people who refused to adopt Cali due to his behavior so I decided to say yes. I know what it feels to be rejected and I can't endure it, knowing that someone as cute as him feels the same. I adopted Cali because no one wants to, not because no one cannot.

Tomorrow, I'll go to the clinic to get antirabies and anti-tetanus shots. I will not give up on Cali so those who have thoughts of sending away their pets. If you can't handle a single bite, DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ANY KIND OF ANIMALS YOU CAN THINK OF!

Dogs (and other pets) are supposed to be part of the family and not just an accessory for your filthy little show of wealth. We are the one responsible for shaping their purpose. God knows he can't be physically with us so he gave us dogs. He gave us dogs to show us what unconditional love means and I don't think we deserve it.

13 Extra-Ordinary Reasons Why You Need to Watch PAMILYA ORDINARYO

1. It makes us see how we are all just struggling to get through our own sets of challenges. Such as how can I show my partner every day how much I love him/her.

2. It makes us realize how big a responsibility it is to bring a child into this world.

3. It makes us aware that each of us is different and yet, are so similar in many ways.

4. It makes us see people like Jane and Aries as human beings, not as statistics.

5. It makes us more conscious of our biases.

6. It reminds us to stay humble and grateful for the roof over our heads, the education we are getting and for all the little things we take for granted (like having access to tissue paper, ganern..)

7. It is a tool for Teachers of all stripes to use in their classrooms.

8. It can help both NGO and Government workers to better understand the people they are trying to serve.

9. It makes us appreciate how love and affection can be expressed in so many different ways (such as but not limited to PDAs, shoplifting and 5-minute quickies, tsk!).

10. If you are an aspiring filmmaker, it makes you see a new way of depicting a familiar milieu in a different way. The film milieu is the 3rd character so you better get it right.

11. It makes us feel uncomfortable. And there is value in learning to be comfortable in being uncomfortable.

12. It makes us see that our social institutions still have a lot of growing up to do.

13. It's much more realistic and better than the hit series 13 reasons why. BOOM!

And hopefully, it makes you want to go out there and do a film as well. Or do something creative or outrageous. Something A(hh)-MAZE- ing so that you can contribute something.

PAMILYA ORDINARYO, written and directed by Eduardo Roy Jr. won several awards both here and abroad. It also got nine (9) nominations from the Gawad Urian. It will be shown in 8 SM Cinemas this July 7-13 as part of the Cine Lokal program of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP).

One day itinerary to Langkawi, Malaysia

If you are on a tight schedule but wants to enjoy Langkawi for a day, I have prepared to you an itinerary that may help. Langkawi is an archipelago of islands in Malaysia that is also known as Jewel of Kedah. The place is situated near the Thai border, hence transportation to Thailand is available.

Langkawi offers numerous spots that can be enjoyed by travelers and even the whole family.

Please note that this itinerary may be hard to attain, but at least you get the idea of what can happen to your day in Langkawi.

A post shared by Japhet (@japhetonthego) on

The best way to get to Langkawi is by boarding a plane from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi  Airport. The travel may take 1 to 2 hours unlike when you take the bus that may go from 8 to 12 hours depending on traffic.

If you are taking the bus, allow at least a day so you have time to rest after a long ride. The bus usually takes off from a specific terminal of your choice (you may book your tickets HERE) and will drop off to Kuala Perlis terminal. From there you can book a ferry that will take you to Langkawi. The ferry ride usually takes 40 minutes to 1 hour.

A post shared by Japhet (@japhetonthego) on

Since you'll only be there for a day, I suggest you reserve or book your tour online. But if you wish to stay for a night to enjoy some wholesome beach party, you may ask for your hotel receptionist to book the tour for you. I highly suggest you select the half day island hopping tour that will start 9:00 in the morning to 1:00 in the afternoon. The 4-hour tour includes visiting the famous Lake of Pregnant Maiden, Eagle Watching, and a dip to Pulau Beras Basah.

After the tour, you may have your lunch for an hour and go directly to Panorama Langkawi. Panorama Langkawi is the theme park that offers world renowned tourist attractions such as Sky Cab and Sky Bridge - the world's longest free span and curved bridge.

One day itinerary to Langkawi, Malaysia

The usual travel time from Pantai Cenang to Panorama Langkawi takes 30 to 40 minutes. By the time you arrive, make sure to book the 4:30 or 4:45 PM Sky Cab schedule as the sunset usually takes place by 6:30 or 7:00 PM.

The cable car (Sky Cab) will take you up the Sky Bridge for about 30 to 40 minutes. Once there, you will have to pay for another ticket (price list below) to go to the curved bridge. Your options are trekking the sky trail or getting into the Sky Glide (which I think is the most convenient way).

Random Life Thoughts

Recently, I found myself crying on some silly thoughts. I feel like the world spins so fast and everybody started getting bigger and me still a dumb mess. Small things trigger my depression. It makes me want to vanish. In my dreams, I always end up seeing myself in a blood bath. It gives me the creeps, but there's a feeling of ease and satisfaction. I believe that afterlife means me being born again. In another lifetime, in another physique. While I look forward to that day, I tried accepting the norms I used to hate. I tried to think of the possibilities of salvation, but it's not what I expected it to be. The people I look up to becomes the epitome of greed. They become mascots of my personal pandemonium. I got sad. Slowly I feel like I'm becoming one of them. Running doesn't make any sense at all when you have nothing to look forward to. Floating in abyss makes me sick, but it's the only place to go. It's the only safe place I can be.
